Most people think a ten-minute dash to the local coffee shop is what you need to make it through the day. Whether it’s the caffeine, being away from your boss or a little fresh air most people feel better after their daily fix. But it turns out it might be none of the above.
According to a researcher at Edith Cowan University, it’s the background noise that improves your mood. According to his study the buzz of background noise triggers sensory signals in the brain that enhance your mood, improve your senses and help with your decision making. All of that adds up to a higher production level, which means your boss should add a couple extra breaks to your schedule.
But the key is the right amount of noise. If you have earphones with loud music or the café is hosting a karaoke night then your performance takes a hit. Science says all you need is 25 minutes of noise. That’s a lot cheaper than a daily latte.
