What’s in a name? a lot if you’re one of the biggest magazines in the world. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
Mark Graham runs the Star Inn at Vogue, a rural English pub located in the small village of Vogue. Yes, Vogue like the magazine. Recently Graham said he received a letter from the publisher Conde Nast asking if he would consider changing the name of his pub. The end of the letter wrote quote “Please reply within seven days or we will take remedial action.” Graham decided he wasn’t going to be pushed around, telling local media this is a case of the big boys trying to stomp on the little boys. To fight back, he sent a letter back to the publisher. In it he made the case that the village, located about 250 miles southwest of London had been around a lot longer than the magazine. And said he assumed that when they named the magazine, they didn’t ask the people of Vogue for permission, and that he would not be changing the name. And in response, the magazine backed down.
