Uber is trying to offset the rising cost of gas for its drivers, and customers are paying the price. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.

This week a new surcharge went into effect for Uber customers. With the recent surge of gas prices, many drivers have been forced to quit or threatened to because they aren’t pulling in enough money to deal with the added expense. According to the company, the surcharge will be either $0.45 or $0.50 for each Uber trip. Delivering food will cost you as well. Any UberEats deliveries will cost either $0.35 or $0.45 per order. The price difference depends on your location. Uber says the increase will only be in effect for 60 days. But is reserving the right to assess the situation and the current price of gas after 60 days. The company is also making it a point to say that all the extra money will go directly to drivers. Uber competitor Lyft also announced temporary fuel surcharges in the U.S. and Canada that will be in effect for at least two months and go directly to drivers. Brian Banmiller. CBS News.
