Secrets out, movie theatres are charging more for certain movies. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
During a recent investor call AMC Theatres Chief Adam Aron made it clear that the company was going employ surge pricing for the new movie “The Batman “. According to the Hollywood Reporter the surge pricing was for North American theatres and it increased prices by 50 cents. According to the Hollywood Reporter AMC isn’t the only theatre chain trying to bring in more money following the pandemic. Cinemark and Regal both experimented with price surging for the latest Spider-Man movie. And they did it again with “The Batman”. They just weren’t as vocal with their plan as AMC was. And we may not know if the next blockbuster will also cost more. Thanks to government regulation theatres cannot talk about future pricing plans. But despite the increase in prices it didn’t slow down movie fans. The release was the third biggest weekend for AMC especially for IMAX theatres. As for Hollywood executives, so far they aren’t saying much. But if it affects sales in smaller markets that could change. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
