Forget retailers, this year the big Thanksgiving weekend winners were theaters. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.

Over the long weekend people in the US and Canada spent around $142 million dollars on movie tickets. While that number isn’t as big as years past, experts say it’s a strong sign that people are heading back to theaters and willing to spend money again. A win for an industry hit hard by closures and a rise in streaming services. Some of the big titles bringing in movie lovers included Disney’s “Encanto.” Experts say its success is a sign that family-friendly films have a chance and that people are more comfortable bringing their children out and about again. More good news, the success of “House of Gucci.” Recently other movies aimed at older audiences such as “No Time to Die” and “The Last Duel” haven’t fared as well. Another popular title over the holiday weekend was “Ghostbusters: After Life.” Experts believe this one will have staying power through the new year. Overall, the industry should be encouraged by the news and support of consumers. Streaming services, not so much. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
