Thousands of Russians are finding themselves stranded, as the impact of war is hitting home. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
More than 6,000 Russians have found themselves stuck in Thailand’s beach resorts since president Putin waged his war on Ukraine. The two main problems, cancellations of their flights home by airlines that have stopped flying to Russia and suspension of financial services, particularly by credit card companies. In addition, there is a large group of them who don’t want to return home because of what is happening there. Now some airlines are trying to find different accommodations by flying through other countries. Hotels are helping by offering discounted rates and Thailand’s government is offering 30 day visa extensions without payment. Turns out the war is also threatening Thailand’s hopes for economic recovery because there are many Russians and Ukrainians who vacation there during this time of year. That plus rising prices of oil and travel and that economic rebound is now being threatened. And while none of that compares to what people in Ukraine are going through, the repercussions of Putin’s war are being felt worldwide. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
