Times are tough. But some people still find ways to smile—and here’s how.

Depressed or unhappy people make for an uncomfortable work environment, even a virtual one. So, Forbes asked what makes some people happier than others.

According to their research, it can be drilled down to avoiding unproductive ways of thinking. In short, there are certain things they don’t waste time caring about.

First, pursuing happiness as a life goal. Researchers found the pursuit of happiness can drive away happiness. In one study, people who watched nothing but happy movies were more depressed than people who did not watch movies but instead watched the news.

As an alternative, researchers suggest living in the moment and not seeking out what you or society considers a happy experience.

Something else to forget about—finding out who is to blame when something goes wrong. Happy people don’t worry about assigning or accepting blame. Instead, they figure out how to make things go right.
