Less Than Fancy
Listen Now: Less Than Fancy
Tech companies have some of the best offices in the world, but that doesn’t mean you should work there. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
Clive Wilkinson has planned office spaces for companies such as Microsoft, Disney and his most famous work, Google. The campus is one of the most impressive in the world and a big reason people want to work there. Besides its clubhouse vibe, amenities include gourmet chefs, a gym, massage room, swimming pools and everything you can imagine. But now, the man who designed it says the whole situation is a dangerous one. In an interview with NPR, Wilkinson says the idea that you can provide everything to support a worker’s life has a lot of negative impacts. He says blurring the line between work and non-work keeps people chained to the office. For example, at Google employees don’t have to leave for anything. This means that most of their life is spent on a work campus, shutting everything else out. Wilkinson says while that might keep workers happy it can also lead to burnout. And that’s a problem a fancy workspace can’t always fix. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
