Listen Now: A Smartphone Cleanse
In today’s world everyone is connected but what if you were forced to do it without a screen?
Almost everyone has a smartphone, and replying to email, texting or posting to social media. Now there are reports of smartphone addiction, people are now able to work around the clock and most children are being raised by apps.
To see what would happen if we didn’t have a small box connected to our hands, a college professor challenged students to give up their phones cold turkey for nine days. According to Inc.com, he did this in 2014 and again in 2018. In both cases he challenged students to complete the experiment for extra credit and write about what happened.
Both times students reported paying more attention to the people around them and having better face-to-face conversations. Those without a phone noticed how often people with a phone would look at it instead of them while chatting. Students reported being more productive. Without instagram and newsfeeds to scroll through they would actually get things done.
Until, of course, those nine days were up.
