Want to jump start your career? All you need is thirty minutes.

It’s no secret that networking can open doors. After all, it’s not what you know but who you know that matters. So how can you take advantage of the crowd at your next event?

According to Ladders.com, there are five moves that will still leave you time for finger foods and a cocktail. First tip: stand in the middle of the room. For most people, their comfort zone would be on the outside looking in, but at events people tend to talk to whoever is closest to them. So, stand in the middle where you are more likely to be drawn into conversations or meet someone new. Set a goal before you arrive on how many people you want to meet; this will keep you from straying.

Next, find someone to compliment. If you’re having trouble striking up a conversation, a compliment is an easy way to break the ice. Just don’t make it weird.
