A small library in Maine is on a rescue mission, for unwanted books. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.

About 22 miles off the coast of Maine sits a small island with a tiny library. And now it’s filling its shelves with books deemed inappropriate or banned in other parts of the country. Books such as “And Tango Makes Three” and “Two Male Penguins that Raised a Chick Together”. Or classics such as “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee and “The Grapes of Wrath”. by John Steinbeck. The woman who runs the library recently returned from the mainland with a stack of these books, telling the local paper “If you don’t want it in your library, we want it in ours.” She says there are only about 100 people who live on the island year-round with a high live- and- let- live tolerance.  For years people on the island traded books among themselves until they created a small building in 2016, then expanded in 2022. No cards or fees, just an honor system. And a collection of some of the best books ever written. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
