Saudi Government’s “Progressive” Step Forward

The Saudi government is taking a step towards something most of us take for granted.

The government has announced that women in Saudi Arabia will no longer be required to use separate entrances from men when they enter a restaurant. The government also says women need not sit behind partitions.

The new rule was announced quietly and the practice is already in place in some coastal cities. The transition might be harder among traditional saudis who view gender segregation as a religious requirement. In some cases, restaurants with no room to keep men and women apart have just refused to let women in. Some business owners are praising the move saying it will bring in more business opportunities. Plus they don’t need to spend the money renovating the space to meet the old laws.

In recent years, similar social laws have been overturned, women and men can attend concerts and go to the movies. Women are also able to attend sporting events but are only able to sit in the family section.

Still unsegregated: saudi weddings—unless it’s held at a restaurant.
