The Army National Guard is reporting for duty, in the classroom. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.

To deal with the shortage of school teachers and staff, New Mexico is calling up National Guard troops to help. So far, about 80 service members have volunteered to work in schools. They have gone through background checks and taken brief courses usually required for substitute teachers. Like with subs they don’t have to learn much about the curriculum but do need to be attentive to students. So far New Mexico is the only state to require such action. Last fall it saw a surge of teacher retirements and right now there are about 1,000 open teaching positions in the state. The Governor says this is just a temporary solution and state officials are working to improve the current teaching force with increased pay and other strategies. As for the troops, most say they stay in uniform because it makes them look older and commands more respect. Right now, the deployments are prioritizing more rural areas but you never know when a soldier turned teacher might show up and report for duty. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
