A Google engineer says he was put on leave because his job became a little too real. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
Recently a senior software engineer in Google’s responsible AI group said he was suspended because he took some of his concerns public. Those concerns? That the chat bot he was working on, known as lamda or language model for dialogue applications, had the ability to experience feelings and emotions. Bottom line, the chatbot is becoming too human. He discussed these concerns with the Washington Post, telling the paper he was investigating ethics concerns with people who did not work at Google. He had also seeked outside counsel about how to handle the situation. At Google, the company is dismissing its engineers’ claims that the chat bot has become self aware. Instead, a Google spokesperson says the systems can imitate the exchanges found in millions of sentences and can talk about any topic. This is just the latest controversy for Google’s AI team which has seen a number of people quit or get fired. Guess we’ll just have to wait for the robots to take over. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
