People are re-emerging from the pandemic lockdown, and in New York City, something else is coming with it. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
According to city data, rat sightings are more frequent than they’ve been in a decade. Through April, people have called in about 74 hundred sightings. Up almost a thousand from the year before. So, what’s the deal? Well as life returns to normal for people, it’s the same story for rats. People have returned to the city and with them comes trash and discarded scraps of food. Outdoor dining is the new norm and there’s always some treasure there for the rodents. Especially if the staff is slow to clear the tables. The city and its various mayors have tried multiple solutions to ease the problem. Everything from traps to more frequent pickups to housing inspections but nothing sticks. The latest announcement by Mayor Adams is padlocked curbside trash bins designed to reduce the piles of garbage bags which just become an all-you-can-eat buffet for the rats. The city is back open for business and all types of customers are coming back with it. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
