Public Urination
Listen Now: Public Urination
Public transportation can include unpleasant moments, now one city is working to alleviate one of them. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
This summer the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is launching a pilot program to tackle the problem of public urination in system elevators. According to the Boston Herald, urine detection sensors will be placed in four downtown elevators. The sensors will then alert transit ambassadors who will send out a cleaning crew. So how do they know when it’s time to clean things up? The sensors on the ceiling of an elevator will have an attached fan which allows them to suck in air and smell what is present. And since urine has a distinct smell it’s not hard to track what is being left behind by people. The idea came from another program launched nearly a decade ago in Atlanta. In that case strobe lights and alarms go off when urine is detected and police are alerted. The elevators are then out of service until they are cleaned up. That program has been deemed a success. As for Boston? Let’s see if the air gets a little fresher. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
