We live in a virtual world, and your first step in the door might be over the phone. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.

One of the first steps to getting hired may be a phone interview. This is a way for your potential employer to start narrowing down the field and get an idea of the kind of person you are. And in a world of text messages and emojis, an actual phone conversation with a stranger can be a terrifying concept. So, to help you feel qualified enough to answer, TheLadders.com has some interview tips. For example, and this should be an obvious one. Answer the phone right away. Pick up after one or two rings and make sure you are the person who answers the phone. Otherwise, it will appear as if you weren’t on time or don’t care much about the interview. Next, make sure there are no distractions. Do your interview in a quiet, clutter free room where you are comfortable. For more phone interview tips go to BanmillerOnBusiness.com and make sure to give the right number. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
