Everyone wants to know why you’re leaving a job, but no one asks why you stay. I’m Brian Banmiller on business.
The exit interview. Part of the transition from leaving one job and moving on to the next stage of life. This is when your boss wants to know why you made the decision to leave, hoping the answer will help the boss hold on to employees who remain. but according to Inc.com and psychologist Adam Grant, it’s the wrong move. Instead, there are two conversations bosses should be having with employees before an exit interview would even be needed. First, an entry interview. Find out why they took the job, what they’re hoping to learn and what they enjoy working on. This might seem repetitive from the interview process but it lets the person know you’re serious about their success. Next, conduct a stay interview. This is where you explore the ongoing relationship and ask things such as “What are the highlights and lowlights of working here,” “What do you need from us.” and keep the conversation going, hoping the worker will decide to stick around.
