March of the Penguins
Listen Now: March of the Penguins
The pandemic has made a lot of us lonely, and the animal kingdom is no exception. I’m Brian Banmiller on business.
Every day at a zoo in Thailand, a parade of penguins waddles out of their enclosure for a daily splash in a pool. The whole idea behind the trip is to keep them active and healthy during the current lockdown in that country, but for the penguins there’s a big thing missing, people. A penguin specialist at the zoo says when they first walk out they seem confused because they are used to seeing a big crowd. Now no one is there, so they stop and look around as if wondering where everyone went. And to make it even worse, that crowd of people used to feed the penguins so they’re also wondering where the free snacks went. Now, instead of stopping to entertain the crowds zookeepers are putting the penguins through a new routine. After the forty-one birds are fed, they are marched down a long gangway to an outdoor pool for exercise. And like all the rest of us, staring at the same faces. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
