Maine is trying to clean up its behavior, through its license plates. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.

The salty language common to see on Maine license plates is getting a makeover. Recently Maine’s secretary of state released rules that would eliminate references to genitalia, sex acts and profanities. And there’s a lot of language to clean up. Back in 2015 the state severely loosened the language allowed on its vanity license plates. And people took their freedom of expression to whole new levels, which in turn led to a number of complaints. So, a newly drafted set of laws would prohibit license plates that falsely suggest an association with a government agency, encourage violence or unlawful activities, attack race or religion, reference sex act or represent profane or obscene language. A public hearing is scheduled for later this month. And if you feel like your plate is being taken out of context, or people just don’t get it, then there will be a chance for you to appeal if your plate is rejected because of language. So clean it up, or just get a little more creative. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
