There’s a backlog at the IRS and everyone is passing the blame. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
About 24 million taxpayers are still waiting for their refunds from last year. And in some cases, it’s going to be another ten months until they receive them. That is just one reason the IRS is strongly encouraging everyone to file early this year. According to sources who spoke with the Washington Post, much of it has to do with struggles to hire and train new staff. And the frustration has made its way to capitol hill. About 30 Republicans recently sent a letter to the Treasury Secretary calling the situation “untenable.” But according to Democrats some of those same Republicans voted to block funding to the IRS. but now that taxpayers are feeling the pain, maybe both sides of the aisle can come together. The pandemic also didn’t help things. Many IRS employees worked from home without access to a number of things which contributed to the backlog. Add to that old equipment and delays with the mail and you can’t win. Perhaps a hiatus from taxes while they catch up? Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
