New York is introducing a background check of a different kind, your social media. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
With the recent mass shootings in cities across the country, local leaders are once again trying to figure out how to keep people alive without threatening their rights. In New York state it appears one answer is social media. The Governor recently announced that anyone seeking to carry concealed handguns will be required to hand over lists of their social media accounts for a review of their “character and conduct.” But while the move is being applauded by gun control advocacy groups, critics have their doubts. For example, there are concerns about how the law will be enforced and whether people’s free speech and privacy will be affected. Then there’s the question about who will handle this new application process. People might turn over their accounts but those accounts need to be examined and the sheriffs who would be in charge say they haven’t received the money or the resources. Either way the law is set to take effect in September, and that’s not the only new requirement for applicants. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
