Drivers Wanted
Listen Now: Drivers Wanted
There’s a gas shortage in the UK and now the army is rolling in. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
For the past few weeks there has been a severe gas shortage in the UK. and the problem isn’t a lack of gas but a lack of truck drivers to deliver it to stations. And that shortage is tied to the UK’s decision to leave the European Union this year, cutting off access to vital foreign truck drivers. So, according to Business Insider, 200 military tanker personnel, one hundred of which are drivers, will assist with deliveries. At least until the situation begins to stabilize. The government has also written to all people who hold a heavy goods vehicle license, past and present, to offer them training in an attempt to plug the labor shortage. They have also temporarily relaxed safety restrictions for those drivers, allowing them to work longer hours, and extended emergency visas to European drivers and workers. But it’s not just a shortage of fuel. The situation is causing long lines, extreme panic buying and fights. I guess it’s safe to say they need more drivers. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
