Diaper Donations
Listen Now: Diaper Donations
One state wants to help you save on your taxes, with diapers. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
A bill proposed in Maryland would allow deductions up to one thousand dollars from state income tax. But to cash in you need to donate diapers or feminine products to a qualified charity. Advocates of the bill say the idea came about because during the pandemic these items were in high demand. And in many cases, they sold out, leading people to pay higher prices for what they needed. Or people were losing their jobs and unable to afford what they needed. So, the bill is designed to prevent that from happening. One of the bill sponsors says the incentive of a tax break is not just to stock the shelves. It’s also to raise awareness of hygiene inequity and get donations. And it’s an important need. According to the national diaper bank network, infants require up to twelve diapers per day, costing at least eighty dollars a month. A Maryland diaper bank says during the pandemic diaper demand was up four hundred percent. So give a little, and get some back. Brian Banmiller, CBS news.
