Crowning a King
Listen Now: Crowning a King
Why be a CEO when you can be King? I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
Piel Island is a small piece of land half a mile off the western coast of northern England. Just 50 acres large it boasts a few buildings, lots of grey seals and a pub called the Ship Inn. Because of the island’s beauty and popularity, summer months are busy and ferries bring people back and forth. So, whoever runs the pub is also responsible for the entire island. And here’s the kicker. Whoever that person is, will be known as the “King of Piel.” According to the local authority that oversees the island since at least the 1800’s the owner of the pub has been known as King of the Island. A tradition that includes sitting on an old chair, putting a helmet on your head and waving a sword while buckets of beer are dumped on your head. The council is looking for someone who will fulfill a ten-year lease and is dedicated to the job. They also need to enjoy isolation and peace and quiet. It’s not easy being King.
