The price of chicken and eggs could be rising but not because of the usual problems. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
For months we’ve been hearing about inflation and problems on the supply chain raising the price on pretty much everything. But not some poultry farms are facing a new threat, the bird flu. Earlier this month the bird flu infected a commercial turkey flock in Indiana. To prevent the spread, all 29,000 turkeys were killed. Now a second flock near that first farm is suspected to have the same virus. The presence of bird flu has also been detected in commercial broiler chickens in Fulton County and Webster County Kentucky. A flock of mixed species birds in Northern Virginia is also positive for the virus. State officials are now going around to these different farms and putting healthy birds under quarantine. Any birds that test positive will be killed and removed. Officials are working hard to stop a widespread spread, similar to the one we saw in 2015. That cost the government nearly one billion dollars and forced the killing of millions of birds. Just what we don’t need right now, another virus. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
