A 64 year-old fugitive is back behind bars, thanks to the pandemic. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.

In mid-September Darko Desic walked into a police station near Sydney Australia and turned himself in. Turns out that back in 1992 he escaped from prison while serving a 33 month sentence for growing marijuana. But the covid lockdown in Sydney made him homeless, jobless and with nowhere else to turn. Nowhere that is except back to prison. Now he is serving the remaining 14 months of his original sentence, plus an additional two tacked on by the judge last month. He made his original escape by using a hacksaw blade to cut through his cell window bars. No word on where he found the saw. Then with bolt cutters found in a shed, he cut through a fence and was free. He spent the past 30 years in the beach suburbs north of Sydney. He said he escaped because he was afraid of being deported back to his homeland, which was then known as Yugoslavia. But times have changed and it’s unclear where he will be sent once he’s released.
