A woman in Southern California bought a winning lottery ticket, but the whole thing could be a wash, literally. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.

Recently the deadline to claim a winning lottery ticket from early November came and went. A winning lottery ticket worth twenty-six million dollars was sold at a convenience store in an LA suburb. Recently a woman came in and said she had purchased the ticket and put it in her pants pocket. Unfortunately, she forgot about it and threw her pants in the laundry, where the ticket was destroyed. The store’s manager told local reporters that surveillance video showed her buying a ticket. That surveillance video has been turned over to lottery officials investigating the claim. Lottery officials say if someone loses what they say is a winning ticket they have to provide evidence that they owned it, such as a photograph of the front and back of the ticket. Something most people don’t usually do. If the prize isn’t claimed or verified then California public schools will get the nineteen million dollars pot. And that woman will have learned a very expensive lesson. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
