A Costly Mistake
Listen Now: A Costly Mistake
A college scholarship can take a lot of pressure away, unless it’s not real. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
Recently 58 prospective students of Central Michigan University were informed they won a scholars award which included full tuition, room and board, money toward books and a $5,000 “Study Away Award.” Upon hearing the news, students called friends and family, posted the news on social media, and then had a reality check. Turns out it was a mistake. School staffers were testing new messaging technology and the messages that went out were fake. It seems that specific scholarship is awarded to high school seniors with a 3.7 gpa or higher that have already been admitted to the university. But the air wasn’t completely taken out of the students’ sails. In a statement a spokesman for the university expressed regret for the disappointment and frustration caused by the error. To make it right, the school is now offering each of the 58 students the equivalent of a full-tuition scholarship. They’ll have to foot the bill for their food and housing but not a bad consolation prize. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
