Coffee Balls
Listen Now: Coffee Balls
Companies everywhere are trying to cut down on waste, and now they’re coming for your caffeine fix. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
There are lots of things we use everyday that we don’t consider being bad for the planet. A lot of them have already been replaced with less harmful things. Think plastic straws and plastic utensils or plastic bags. And next on the list, the plastic pods a lot of people use to make their coffee. A Swiss retailer says it is launching a coffee making system designed to replace those pods that produce thousands of tons of waste around the world every year. The circle shaped capsules are being described as “coffee balls”. The company says they are fully compostable, unlike the pods made popular by its rival Nestle almost 40 years ago. The Swiss company says its coffee balls are encased in a thin, flavorless, seaweed-based cover that can be discarded with the spent coffee after every use. The company says the coffee balls along with a special coffee maker will be rolled out first in Switzerland and France next year. Hopefully it doesn’t change the taste. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
