On Strike
Listen Now: On Strike
It’s a worker’s market and they’re celebrating by going on strike. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
John Deere, Kaiser, Kellogg’s. All across the country employees from a variety of companies are throwing up their hands and heading to the picket lines. According to Time magazine in the first five days of this month there were ten different strikes in a number of industries. That doesn’t take into account the massive strike in the film and television industry that was narrowly avoided in a last-minute deal. So why now? According to Time magazine, workers are fed up with low pay and understaffing. Things they have been dealing with long before the pandemic changed our lives. Now companies are in need of workers and those workers see the chance to improve their own lives. Recent polls show that 68% of Americans approve of labor unions. The highest it has been in years. There’s even an increase in approval from republicans, a group usually on the other side of that pendulum. Hard to tell if the strikes are having any real impact. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t going to try. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
