Listen Now: Massive Burglaries in Tokyo Art Experiment
[xyz-ips snippet=”post-thumb-url”]
Art is meant to be admired, or in one case stolen.
Recently an art exhibit opened in Tokyo to packed crowds. Some people were there to look at the works, others to buy, but most were casing the joint. Hours after the gallery closed, a large crowd had formed, all ready to grab what they could carry and make a break for it. The difference to most robberies, it was completely legal and police officers were there to clear the road of traffic.
The event was intended as an experiment to alter the relationship between artists and visitors. It was also designed to bring more people in to check out the work and give the artists an idea of what people considered good enough to steal.
But word spread so fast that a large crowd gathered and what was meant to last for ten days, lasted for ten minutes. In some cases, people showed up ready to snatch-and-grab but found nothing left. Others made off with two-or-three items they planned to sell or keep.
And maybe there were some using it to practice for future burglaries.
