China’s High-Tech Coding Kids

There are basic skills children need before starting school… and in China that skill is coding.

There is a trend among young children in China to learn how to code before they enter primary school. The idea is fueled by parents who believe getting an early start will give them a leg up on competition later in life.

An eight-year-old boy in Shanghai has taken to the skill so well that he now teaches it to other students. His online channel has nearly sixty thousand followers and has been viewed more than a million times. He says his students are a bit older than him but teaching helps him improve his skills.

It was his father who started helping him learn to code when he was only four. A year later the two were writing their own code and playing advanced games together. Parents say these skills are necessary for their children in a government that has been making huge investments in robotics and artificial intelligence.

And parents are preparing their children to be part of that brave new high-tech world.
