Listen Now: The Swarm Squad: Washington’s Urban Beekeeping Defenders
[xyz-ips snippet=”post-thumb-url”]There’s a new business in Washington State and it’s buzzing.
When most people see a bunch of bees heading their way, they head in the other direction. But that’s not the case for The Swarm Squad; Washington’s best and really only line of defense against a rise in urban beekeeping.
In the past sixty years, the number of honeybee hives in the U.S. dropped from 6 million to 2.4 million. So people are stepping up to help by installing hives on their rooftops and gardens. The problem is most of those people live in cities.
A typical hive can house up to seventy thousand bees. So if the hive gets too big about half the bees fly off to find somewhere new to live. That causes a swarm, a literal wall of bees that few people can and want to handle.
So in comes The Swarm Squad, suited up in protective clothing with everything they need to safely relocate the bees. Especially because killing the bees isn’t an option. Killing the bees leaves the honey which will melt and seep into your home, and then bring more bees.
