Listen Now: Branson Weighs In: Why Europe Takes 2X More Vacation Than U.S.
[xyz-ips snippet=”post-thumb-url”]Richard Branson thinks you need a vacation and he knows just how you should ask for it.
Branson, CEO of Virgin Airlines, owns two private islands and an upcoming cruise line, so is no stranger to leisure. Branson says he encourages his companies to give indefinite paid vacation. That way if someone wants to go on a two-month excursion they can.
Branson says if you treat employees like adults, they respect you and put more effort into their work. Unfortunately not every employer agrees. According to the news website Quartz, private sector employees in the U.S. receive an average of sixteen paid vacation days a year, and that includes public holidays.
In comparison, employees in European countries receive double that amount. And when it comes to those sixteen vacation days, most people don’t even use them saying they couldn’t get the time off or felt guilty about not being in the office.
So what does Branson think? If you feel your company needs to consider a little more downtime, talk to your boss and ask to experiment for a year. Or move to Europe.
