United is overhauling its bonus program but not all employees are on board.
Under the new incentive program employees will no longer receive small, annual bonuses. Instead that money will be replaced with things such as a vacation, a new car and for one person a prize of one hundred thousand dollars.
According to a company memo, the perks will be handed out each quarter and will include smaller rewards, as well. However there is a catch; in order to participate in the program workers need a perfect attendance and the airline has to hit its performance targets.
The company says the new program is meant to build excitement and a sense of accomplishment and help United meet its goals. But the president of the flight dispatcher disagrees. He says members would prefer a shot at the smaller bonuses which are more of a sure thing. He says instead of building an atmosphere of teamwork this new program pits all employees against each other in a competition for money and prizes.
And in a situation when employees are watching out for themselves, who’s watching out for customers?
