For some countries wine is part of the culture; but here in America we’re still acquiring a taste for it.
I recently spoke with Napa Valley Winemaker, Robert Foley, about the growing popularity of wine:
“Wine is a cultured drink and as our young country matures we look to the countries in Europe—Italy and France—where wine has been a part of the culture for hundreds of years. It’s understood it’s accepted… it’s not an exception.”
“We’ve got a lot of bottles to open, we’ve got a lot of information to share, and educating to do before we catch up to a culture like that in terms of consumption and understanding of wine.”
As we learn more about the industry, Foley says there is no shortage of students.
“What’s not to love? Wine is a beverage of enjoyment, it’s hedonic, it invites conversation or discussion, it’s an intellectual beverage in a way and it certainly brings people into the kitchen because wine and food are the cat’s meow.”
