Bad Words

[xyz-ips snippet=”post-thumb-url”]Sticks and stones might break your bones, but these words could cost you a job.

In most job interviews you will be asked some form of the question “tell me about yourself.” This is the time to toot your own horn without saying anything that comes off as sounding self-righteous or conceited. But while you think some words are putting your best foot forward, they could actually be working against you.

Here are the ten words that job resource site TheLadders.com says you should avoid and what to use instead. For example, the word independent, you think you’re telling people you don’t need to be micromanaged but what they hear is that you don’t work well with others. Instead, say that while you can work alone, you also like being part of a team and take direction from others.

Using the word intelligent tells them you think you’re smarter and better than anyone else. Instead use terms such as fast learner, logical or perceptive.
