In March of last year Starbucks baristas were instructed to engage customers in discussions about race relations over their morning coffee. But customers weren’t having it. In some cases they wanted to be in and out with the morning pick me up. In other cases they thought a Starbucks was not the appropriate venue for a discussion like that. The backlash was so brutal that the company’s senior vice president of global communications quickly pulled the plug and shut down his Twitter account for 24 hours.
