Listen Now: The Wild Things: Yosemite Through COVID-19

Everything from stores to national parks are closed… but not to everyone.
In the Spring and Summer months, Yosemite National Park is usually full of people. Some of them there for a few nights setting up camp and others there for a hike on the many trails. But now that the gates are closed to visitors, some of the harder-to-see sights are making an appearance.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the park looks very different these days. There is less noise, you can’t smell exhaust from the cars and there isn’t as much trash littering the ground. All that has made for a welcoming situation for the park’s wildlife.
There have been reports from the skeleton staff left behind of bobcats wandering through parking lots, coyotes chasing squirrels and a surge in the bear population. Staff members say while they are usually hidden, now they can be seen hanging around apartments and campsites in broad daylight.
Employees say they’re doing everything they can to stay healthy, which means locked gates. And while the people are away, the animals will play.
