Top Gun is flying away from the competition. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
This past weekend movie theater chains wanted to get people back in front of the big screen. So, they brought back some of this year’s biggest blockbusters and dropped ticket prices to $3, prices not seen in years. and coming out on top of the special holiday box office, “Top Gun: Maverick.” pulling in just under $8 million dollars and taking the top spot from the expected favorite “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” and this gives the sequel starring Tom Cruise another bragging right. It is now the top-grossing movie for Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. Overall, it is now the fifth highest-grossing movie ever at the domestic box office taking a spot from “Black Panther.” but it’s not just a silver screen success story. Since making its debut on streaming it is now the number one bestselling digital sell-through title ever in the country in the first week of release. And it’s among the twenty best selling digital releases of all time after only one week. So, you might just bet on a sequel? Brian Vanmiller, CBS News.
