FedEx is making sure your packages are secure, very secure. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.

The Federal Aviation Administration is currently reviewing a request from the delivery company to add infrared laser technology to some of its cargo planes. The technology is designed to project a laser outside the plane that counters and disrupts the heat-seeking capability of a missile. The document to the FAA says because of recent incidents of civilian planes being fired upon by missiles, companies are being forced to take countermeasures. FedEx cited a passenger plane being hit by a missile after taking off from Baghdad, and a missile attack that downed a passenger plane over Ukraine, killing everyone on board. FedEx operates the world’s largest cargo air fleet with more than 600 planes. It currently does not own any of the planes it wants to put the new technology on. As for the FAA, its current design standards do not accommodate anti-missile technology and it’s something you don’t usually see on non-military aircraft. No word on when the FAA will make its decision. Seems those friendly skies are not always so friendly. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
