Reviews on Racism

Yelp is taking a stand against racism—and it’s getting mixed reviews.

Yelp, the search and review site, has announced it would post alerts on the pages of businesses where customers or employers have reported incidents of racism.

In a statement, Yelp reported it would use “Business accused of racist behavior” alert when there was resounding evidence that a business owner or employee had displayed racist behavior, actions that include the use of racist slurs or symbols.

The company said the alert would always link to a news article from what it calls a credible media outlet. And it seems the alert has already been placed on some business pages.

While some applauded the move, critics are concerned businesses would be falsely accused and become a target. They point out the company has not defined what it considers resounding evidence or elaborated on which news organizations they consider credible.

The company has also not responded to concerns of false accusations. Yelp says if a business that has been red flagged takes steps such as firing offending employees, the alert will be downgraded.
