The Reopening of Paris

After months of lockdown, Paris is starting to reopen and some businesses are stretching their legs.

This week restaurants, cafes and bars in Paris opened their doors to welcome back customers. But here’s the catch, inside dining is still not an option.

So, to bring in more people, Paris restaurants and cafes are spreading out. The mayor says she has given permission to put tables and chairs on sidewalks in front of buildings and in some cases in parking spaces. They can even expand out in front of their neighbors as long as owners there do not object.

The mayor is also suspending terrace taxes to help owners recover from the shutdown. Restaurant owners say this is all meant to help businesses get up and running. In some cases, streets where there are a few popular restaurants will be closed to traffic so more people can get a seat and be served.

The reopening of restaurants is part of the second phase of reopening France. It also includes schools and museums such as The Louvre. And maybe one day we’ll get to visit again.
