South Africa’s Quarantine Cocktail Thieves

South Africa recently lifted a ban on the sale of alcohol, but not everyone was spending their days dry.

At the end of March, as part of its lockdown plan, South Africa banned the sale of liquor. The idea was this would ease pressure on emergency offices and avoid a spike in domestic violence. The ban ended this week but it seems some people couldn’t wait for a drink.

Just one day before the ban was set to expire workers at a supermarket in Johannesburg arrived to find thieves had tunneled into the store and stole thousands of dollars in liquor. By burrowing through the concrete floor, they were able to get away with whisky, brandy, gin, vodka and beer.

Police say they used electrical and storm water tunnels to gain access to where the liquor was kept. The store says it’s unclear how the thieves knew exactly where to tunnel or how long it took to get through the thick concrete floor. They also suspect they came back multiple times when they needed to stock back up.

Some people need a quarantine cocktail.
