Puppy Love: Australia’s Matchmaking Canine

Dogs can be trained to do many services… and now matchmaking is being added to the list.

Moses is a detection dog who lives and is being trained in the state of Victoria in Australia. Most detection dogs are trained to locate everything from koalas high in the trees, to animals buried underground.

But Moses has a special trait. He is part of a team helping endangered species breed in captivity. And the first animal they are helping to find love is the tasmanian devil.

Right now, Moses is learning the basic skills for his task and getting exposure to a variety of environments. Most importantly, he is also working with and developing a bond with his trainers and other members of the team.

Experts say the tasmanian devil population has shrunk about 80% in the world thanks to a form of cancer transmitted among the species. Moses will be trained to smell the scent of a female devil and tell when they are ready to reproduce. They will then be introduced to a male.

The things we do for love.
