Drug overdoses are climbing dramatically. Now cities and states are getting creative. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.

According to the CDC there were more than 100,000 overdose deaths in the United States last year. An increase of 15% from the year before. And leading the surge? the synthetic opioid fentanyl. Now local and state officials are looking for ways to help people who overdose and, in some cases, avoid an accidental ingestion of fentanyl. In Dover, Delaware fentanyl test strips will now be included in Narcan kits handed out to the public. This means people can test drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, meth and ecstasy for any traces of fentanyl. The public health department will also distribute ten pack test strips through a free mail order program. At the same time other cities are installing vending machines with Narcan. The city of Austin just installed the first one in the state of Texas and it now sits outside a church. Inside are doses of Narcan which can be used to reverse an opioid overdose. The machines are expensive to install but officials say it’s definitely worth it. Brian Banmiller, CBS News.
