Listen Now: Polish NYE Celebration Cancelled Due To Bear Risk
Don’t poke a sleeping bear… even on New Year’s Eve.
A TV channel in Poland is abandoning plans to hold a big noisy New Year’s Eve celebration at the country’s most popular ski resort. Why? Because the resort is too close to bear caves where bears are hibernating for the winter.
When news of the event spread a warning went out that the bears could be disturbed by the celebration. A petition began circulating, followed by protesters marching on the TV station complete with fake bears sleeping on stretchers.
At first the station argued that multiple sports events had been held at the resort without a problem and said the location would protect people from the wind. The national park fired back that fireworks and loud noises would trigger anxiety in the bears which would lead to a long term drop in the birth rate.
It also pointed out that a bear had died last year after being woken up during New Year’s Eve. So the TV station is looking for a new venue… one that will keep the bears asleep and customers happy.
