McPlant

First McDonald’s announced it was bringing back the McRib. Now it’s going in a whole new direction —meat-free.

The Golden Arches says it has developed a plant-based patty that it’s calling the McPlant. The company’s international president says it’s a plant-based product created exclusively for McDonald’s, by McDonald’s—and it’s only the beginning.

Following the rollout of the meat-free burger, the McPlant line could be expanded to include chicken substitutes and breakfast sandwiches. But first things first. Beginning next year, McDonald’s will introduce its plant-based burger on a market-by-market basis.

All this comes after McDonald’s tried a test-run with Beyond Meat. The two paired up on a burger in southwestern Ontario, but the experiment ended with McDonald’s saying it would continue to evaluate its options. So, enter the McPlant.

So far, McDonald’s hasn’t announce the suppliers it plans to use for its new line. It’s also unclear what ingredients the company is putting inside its plant-based patty.

But mystery meat or not, McDonald’s says it believes customers are ready for a new kind of flavor. As long as it comes with fries.
