Listen Now: Our Expensive Psychology
Right now Apple’s latest devices—the iPhone 8 and 10—are on store shelves and most likely under a lot of christmas trees. And according to a study from the University of Michigan it’s also the time when more phones are lost or broken but not reported. The theory according to researchers is that we are subconsciously breaking or losing our iPhones as soon as an updated model is released.
One of the researchers, Josh Ackerman, says when we lose or break a phone we file a report to ask insurance to cover it or report it stolen. But they found that during a new release the number of claims goes down. He says without meaning to we are becoming less careful with our phone because we know there is something to replace it.
So the next time you’re shelling out hundreds of dollars for the latest upgrade, remember you have only yourself to blame.
